Managing FTP Accounts in cPanel

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allows you to upload and download files to and from your website's hosting space. cPanel provides a user-friendly interface for managing your FTP accounts. This guide will explain how to create, modify, and delete FTP accounts within cPanel.

Understanding FTP Accounts:

  • An FTP account grants access to a specific directory on your website's server.
  • You can create multiple FTP accounts with different usernames and passwords for various purposes.
  • Secure FTP access is recommended using FTPS (FTP over SSL) which encrypts data transfer.

Requirements:

  • Access to your cPanel account

Creating a New FTP Account:

  1. Log in to your cPanel account. Follow the instructions in the previous knowledge base article "How to Access cPanel" if needed.

  2. Navigate to the "Files" section. Look for icons or menus labeled "Files," "File Management," or similar.

  3. Click on "FTP Accounts." This will open the FTP Accounts management interface.

  4. Under "Add FTP Account," fill in the details:

    • Login: Enter a desired username for the FTP account. This username will be used for logging in via FTP clients.
    • Domain: Select the domain name associated with the website where the FTP account will have access.
    • Password: Create a strong and secure password for the FTP account. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords securely.
    • Password (Again): Re-type the password to confirm it.
    • Directory: Optionally, specify a specific directory within your website's file structure where the FTP account will have access. Leaving it blank allows access to the home directory of the chosen domain.
    • Quota: Set a storage limit (in megabytes) for the FTP account if desired. Unlimited quota can be left blank.
  5. Click "Create FTP Account." cPanel will create the new FTP account with the specified details.

Managing Existing FTP Accounts:

  • The "FTP Accounts" interface displays a list of existing FTP accounts.

  • You can view details like username, quota, and home directory for each account.

  • Change Password: Click on "Change Password" next to the desired account to modify its password.

  • Change Quota: Click on "Change Quota" to adjust the storage limit for an account.

  • Change Directory: If you initially assigned a specific directory, you can change it by clicking "Change Directory."

  • Delete Account: Use the "Delete" option with caution, as it permanently removes the FTP account and its associated data access.
